Seems like almost a lifetime ago Skream! was synonymous with the bass heavy, half stepping sound of London’s burgeoning dubstep scene.
Straight outta Croydon, and one of the first generation of dubstep pioneers, his 2005 “Midnight request line” is a stone cold classic of the scene. Mixing clean kicks and ethereal melodies, instantly anthemic it set the template for the many crossover hits that followed it.
In the years that followed the prolific producer remixed and collaborated with lumineries, Benga, Magnetic man, Chromeo, Katy B and Kellis. Album followed album, hit followed hit until.
2013 was a watershed year. Eschewing a change of style and direction musically, Skream started to evolve. Moving away from the American style or trap sound, Skream went 4 x4 . Incorporating house, disco, deep house, techno, edits and gems picked up from Bandcamp into his sets, people lost their shit. In a good way. In a very good way.
Recording a mix for Defected’s “Pete Tong it’s All gone Miami” Skream had now entered into the heights of house music royalty.
Elrow, DC-10, Creamfields, BPM festival, XOYO loves, Fabric, Cocoon, We are FSTVL, Hideout, ADE, Sub Club, Warehouse Project Skream has played out and fucked shit up at them all to cement himself firmly uptown top ranking as THE bill topping house Don of the scene.
Let’s leave the last word to the man himself. Straight outta Croydon, Skream!
“But we’re all the same as people who are standing on the other side of the decks. We’re all ravers at heart, and we’re all out to have a good time. It’s just one big party innit”
